On Christmas Day, 1852, the Bytown and New Edinburgh Shintie Club won 2-1 over the Ottawa Club at what is now the grounds of Rideau Hall and the medallions where presented to the winners of the game.
Pat Mc Grath, Ottawa Citizen In highlighting the game as a seminal event in the chronicle of Ottawa sport, the late hockey historian Paul Kitchen described the medallion’s carved image as “two men in regular winter attire trying to hit a ball with what look like shepherds’ crooks.”Canada’s favourite winter sport is known to have evolved from stick-and-ball games such as hurly, shinty and field hockey.
Mc Kay, a Scottish-born stone mason and all-around business tycoon, built the locks of the Rideau Canal, Rideau Hall (his former villa) and even the building that became the Bytown Museum — the oldest stone structure in the city.
The medallion is currently on display at the Canadian Museum of History, alongside the oldest known hockey stick in Canada.
And 2017 will soon see one of Ottawa’s proudest contributions to sports history — the birth of the Stanley Cup — honoured with a downtown monument marking the 125th anniversary of the world’s most storied trophy.
